SAN JUAN - San Juan police arrested a woman they say hosted an alcohol and drug party for her teenage daughter and her friends. Norma Del Angel Garcia is being held on a $300,000 bond.
"Mom had a prescription for the Xanax bars. And her mom had them locked up in a safe and would provide free access to her daughter to that safe and take whatever she needed," said Sgt. Rolando Garcia of the San Juan Police Department.
He feared the 54-year-old mother made about 40 anti-depressants available to the teens at her home. According to officers, Garcia was also giving some to her daughter to take to school and sell.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to parents about the charges.
"It's not OK. Because in case of an emergency, who is going to respond if anybody gets hurt or some kids passes out on alcohol or something? It's not safe or proper," said Christian Aceves, a father of eight.
"They shouldn't be drinking alcohol if they're underage," said Irma Martinez, another concerned parent. "My home isn't going to be one of the homes where it's tolerated."
Martinez told us she discourages her children from using drugs or alcohol.
Police suspect at least one more home where children can get alcohol and drugs is out there. The teens told them they've attended other parties. Investigators say parents even charge cover for all-you-can-drink.
San Juan police officers are working with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. They're working to track down that second home.
Texas law allows minors to consume alcohol only if it's provided by their direct parent. The alcohol must also be consumed under the supervision of the parent. If the drink is provided in a restaurant, management has the last say.
