HARLINGEN - Police say a man broke into his estranged wife's house and shot and killed her and her friend.
Harlingen officers tell us the accused shooter then turned the gun on himself. He's now in the hospital in critical condition.
The crime happened on the 1000 block of East Polk. Police got a call around 12:30 a.m.
"The initial call was a burglary in progress," said Sgt. John Parrish of the Harlingen Police Department. "The caller heard noises, believed there was a break-in---then heard gunshots... and notified us and let us know about that."
Officers found 29-year-old Sarah Maxwell Montemayor and 28-year-old Devan Leroy Haynes dead inside. They were in separate rooms of the house.
"At this point, it'd be two counts of murder," explained Parrish.
Investigators also found two guns inside the house - a 20-gauge shotgun and a .380 automatic pistol.
Police suspect Montemayor's husband, who's in critical condition at the hospital, shot himself in the head. He has not been charged at this point.
Detectives have no evidence to lead them to suspect anyone else was involved in the shooting. Police are still trying to come up with the motive.
