HARLINGEN - Authorities say thieves may be targeting vehicles they believe may contain personal documents.
Harlingen Police Sgt. John Parrish said the crimes are common in the Rio Grande Valley because more people carry their birth certificates and passports because of the region's proximity to Mexico.
"It's fairly common to see a report come in where there was a burglary and inside their car they had all of that. Their IDs, their passports, birth certificates, everything inside their glove compartment," Parrish said.
Parrish said residents should not keep personal documents in their vehicles.
