EDINBURG - Students were evacuated from Edinburg North High School Monday after strong winds cut off electrical service and fanned a small fire at the campus.
Firefighters doused the blaze before it got out of control.
Trees caused many of the outages in the area, officials said.
"A palm branch, when it comes off the tree, it has that hook on the end and often times it will hook on a line. ... They're long enough to fall across two of the phases and that will create an outage," AEP Spokesman Lee Jones said.
