EDINBURG - A University of Texas-Pan American political science professor says it's important for the president to visit the border.

Dr. Jerry Polinard said President Obama's presence in the Rio Grande Valley would have been symbolic and politically important.

"We are the most Democratic part of a Republican state. I think that it would be important for him to make an appearance," Polinard said.

Polinard said it's a big mistake for Obama not to come to the border and get a look at the immigration crisis. He said the region is underserved and neglected.
