HIDALGO COUNTY - Residents of a neighborhood north of Donna say crime is on the rise. The statements come in the wake of a kidnapping in that area.
"It's scary, because I have family and, well, you can imagine, they can get me, and I wouldn't be at fault, just because of someone's stupidity," area resident Rick said.
Rick said there are constant break-ins in the neighborhood.
"It's really difficult because there are so many thieves around here," he said.
Rick said he has heard rumors of cartels working in the area. He said a friend had a run-in with several men claiming to be members of the Gulf cartel.
"There were some eight guys. They threw him to the ground, kicked him and punched him in the face. They told him they were with the Gulf cartel and that they would kidnap him," Rick said.
Rick said he hopes the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department finds the men responsible for a recent kidnapping.
