BROWNSVILLE - Residents of a Cameron County neighborhood are upset over an illegal dump near their homes.

Brownsville city workers now are trying to determine who dumped the refuse at the site.

"You can see the trash and everything out here. It's disappointing. When we go out at night, we see people throwing trash. It's because we don't have street lights and it's easy to do it without getting caught," Jorge Cavazos said. He owns an apartment complex off Expressway 77/83.

Tires, brush, lumber and furniture are mounting near his property.

"It affects us all and it is bad. People who do it don't care. We need this to get cleaned up. We also need more police patrols and security to put a stop to this," Cavazos said.

Brownsville Health Department Director Art Rodriguez said his department knows about the problem. He said they are trying to find out who is doing the dumping.

"We want to preserve this area. Those who are abusing aren't thinking about what they are doing to us. They need to be respectful because we are the property owners. We are the ones who have to clean up their mess. That's not right," Cavazos said.
