The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated the K-12 school guidance to 'reflect the latest science' on physical distance between students in classrooms on Friday. 

While the CDC recommends middle school and high school students to stay at least six feet apart, the agency says elementary students need just three feet of space. 

Representatives from the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District and Donna Independent School District said they're going to continue implementing six feet of social distancing inside of classrooms. 

COVID-19 Director for Edinburg CISD Dr. Anthony Garza said they don't plan on changing anything due to the low number of students opting for in-person instruction. About 20% of students are currently attending face-to-face classes. 

Garza said a few campuses are starting to see larger in-person enrollments. 

"For those, we are going to go in there and we might have to lower them from six feet, maybe down to the three feet."

According to the CDC, less than 10% of COVID-19 cases in the U.S, have been among children and adolescents between the ages of five and 17. In-person learning in schools have not been associated with substantial community transmission.
