SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) Costa Rica's ruling party presidential candidate says he is dropping out of a runoff election and will stop campaigning because opinion polls show overwhelming support for his contender.
Johnny Araya made the announcement Wednesday after a poll published by the University of Costa Rica showed opposition candidate Luis Solis leading 64 percent to 21 percent ahead of the April 6 runoff election.
Araya says he doesn't want to spend any more money on his campaign.
The vote will still be held and Araya will appear in the ballot because the country's constitution doesn't allow for candidates to drop out.
