Edward Manzano Middle School in Brownsville is a school that is focusing on engineering, science and math. That's why their principal Norma Jean Garcia established the Sally Ride Stem Club.
You may recall Sally Ride was an American physicist and astronaut who joined NASA in 1978 and at the age of 32, became the first American woman to enter into low earth orbit in 1983.
Garcia says "The Sally Ride Stem Club is an opportunity for the young ladies to learn about higher skills with science, technology, engineering, and math and we thought what an awesome way to get the girls together and encourage them to participate in higher education."
Mrs. Garcia says this club will take these girls to higher levels and beyond.
"Through GEAR UP which is a fantastic program that we have here at Manzano through Region One I think it's been an opportunity for the girls to see what they are capable of doing."
And capable is right, that's what Mrs. Garcia wants for these girls. She wants them to grow in everyway possible, not just academically.
"And giving them this opportunity has helped them not only to grow, to help build their self esteem, but to grow educationally, emotionally and to see what opportunities are out there for them in the future."
"It helps them at the middle school age to start developing and planning ahead for the future."
