EDINBURG - Hidalgo County investigators ruled a shooting death in San Carlos two weeks ago as justifiable homicide.

The shooting happened on Thanksgiving night. Duane Lopez shot and killed Francisco Salinas Nieto outside the JNE Auto Shop on Highway 107 in San Carlos.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino said a landlord-tenant dispute led to the shooting. He said Salinas stabbed Lopez before being shot. A surveillance camera across the street recorded the shoots.

Trevino said investigators were waiting on DNA evidence from blood collected at the scene to make a determination on the shooting.

He later released a statement saying his office recommended that the district attorney rule the shooting a justifiable homicide. Trevino said the recommendation was based on the totality of the evidence gathered.

Trevino said his office is recommending that the district attorney present the case findings to a grand jury for a decision on whether to file charges against Lopez.
