WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate Judiciary Committee has narrowly approved the nomination of a longtime legal advocate for liberal causes to run the civil rights division at the Justice Department.
The vote Thursday in the Democratic-controlled committee for Debo Adegbile (DAY-bow uh-DAYG-buh-lay) was 10-8, along party lines.
Adegbile has been praised by civil rights groups as one of the nation's leading attorneys in the field. He is opposed by conservative Republicans and half a dozen law enforcement groups. They criticized him for his legal work at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund on behalf of a former death row inmate convicted of killing a Philadelphia police officer.
