LOS FRESNOS - The Valley's two state-ranked 5A girls' basketball teams, Harlingen and Los Fresnos, led seven local squads to the second round on the opening night of the UIL playoffs. 16th-ranked Harlingen earned a road victory at Rivera on Monday night 66-44. The Lady Falcons of Los Fresnos, ranked 24th in the latest poll, rolled over Harlingen South 56-30. Other 5A action saw Sharyland hold off Nixon 45-43, Weslaco won at Edinburg North 53-47, PSJA North stopped San Benito 55-37 and Del Rio defeated McAllen 43-30. Two more 5A games are scheduled for Tuesday when Mission plays Alexander and Rowe tangles with LBJ. The only Valley 4A schools in action Monday both lost in a double header at Falfurrias. Tuloso-Midway overwhelmed Roma in the opener 61-16. Ray eliminated Weslaco East 51-35. On Tuesday, Hidalgo challenges Alice and Veterans Memorial of Mission plays Moody. Two Valley 3A teams will join 32-3A champ La Feria in the second round. Rio Hondo scored the victory at Raymondville 38-32. Lyford won at the neutral site of Grulla over Zapata 62-56. And in conference A play, Rocksprings got the victory over Lasara 61-43. Nueces Canyon doubled up San Isidro 51-25. La Villa plays Woodsboro on Valentine's Day.
