WESLACO - The athletic programs at Santa Maria High School and Monte Alto High School got a boost last week when the UIL placed them in district 16-A for the next two years. For Santa Maria, it means a return to 11-man football after a hiatus that was due to low participation numbers. Meanwhile, Monte Alto will be playing UIL sports for the first time in school history. The football coaches of both schools spoke with Channel 5 Sports about the excitement in getting started.
