HARGILL - Recent events have some in this small community living in fear.

A wreck involving illegal immigrants, the shooting of a Homeland Security Agent and a recent police chase are reason for concern for some residents.

Hargill sits near a major junction between Highway 77 and Highway 281, Texas 186 connects the two, and smugglers know it, Border Patrol Spokesman Henry Mendiola said.

"It looks like it's nice and peaceful right?" said Alonso Garcia who was in Hargill visiting his parents. But looks can be deceiving.

"It's pretty scary," he said. His parents are old and hard of hearing and he worries that smugglers may be stomping just feet away from their doorstep.

"They're getting kind of old and they can't hear many things going around and they live by themselves," he said. "I come out here and visit them as much as I can."

This week a chase ended in a bailout and eventually an arrest, authorities said. Mendiola said the small community is just south of a major corridor for crime.

"We've got our intelligence ... and they've got their counterintelligence," Mendiola said. "They're always (trying) to find a weak spot. They're trying to exploit where we don't have as many assets deployed."

Mendiola said Border Patrol agents are moved around based on need.

"We refer to our intelligence," he said. "We're referring to what the communities are telling us."
