AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Some parents have raised concerns that a lockdown drill at an Austin school surprised and unnecessarily scared children and teachers.

The Austin American-Statesman (http://bit.ly/JGV0gf ) reports parents were notified by email an hour before the drill at Small Middle School but students and most staff had no prior warning.

School district police Chief Eric Mendez said Tuesday that officers aren't looking to traumatize anyone but what purpose does a drill serve if people know it's coming?

The drill included an administrator announcing over the public address system: "Emergency conditions exist. This is a lockdown."

Jessica Graffunder says her daughter has had trouble sleeping since then and wonders where to draw the line between being prepared and traumatizing faculty and children.

Another parent, Judy Bienvenu, praised school officials for the drill.
