McALLEN, Texas (AP) Corruption scandals that have taken down a South Texas sheriff, his son and several other lawmen has piled another public disgrace onto a region buffeted by them in the past year.
The schemes included money laundering by the then-Hidalgo County sheriff who accepted campaign money from a drug trafficker. It also included a local drug enforcement unit ripping off drug loads for resale.
The sentencings last week of nine ex-lawmen is the latest in a string of high-profile corruption cases that has left officials in the Rio Grande Valley the challenge of winning back the public's confidence.
Interim Sheriff Eddie Guerra says he has been returning calls from citizens still boiling with frustration with the misdeeds that occurred under his predecessor.
