WINDSOR, Ontario (AP) Spain's Javier Fernandez topped the short program at Stake Canada on Friday night, landing a picture-perfect quad toe loop to leave two-time world champion Patrick Chan behind in his home event.

Fernandez, coached by Canadians Brian Orser and Tracy Wilson, had 85.87 points.

Chan, the Canadian star who won the event last year, tripled what was a planned quadruple toe loop, then touched a hand down on his triple Axel. He scored 82.52 points.

Four-time world champions Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy led in pairs. The Germans, wearing multi-color bodysuits, scored 72.26 points to put them comfortably ahead of Canadians Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford.

In the women's short program, Elene Gedevanishvili of Georgia edged rising Canadian star Kaetlyn Osmond, 60.80 to 60.56.
