HIDALGO COUNTY - A startled horse led to the discovery of a young illegal immigrant's body earlier this month near La Joya.

The 11-year-old boy's body was found less than 100 yards away from several houses and 2 miles from the river.

A family who lives nearby raises horses.

"The horse came to the body and started kicking and everything. We came and we saw the body. The horse was kicking and everything, it got scared," Jose Castaneda said.

Castaneda said he ran to his pickup truck after seeing the body and drove directly to a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper parked nearby.

The area where the boy's body was found is a known human-smuggling corridor.

Castaneda said he doesn't see illegal activity in the area during the day, but he hears noises at night.
