HIDALGO COUNTY - Residents of a neighborhood east of Edinburg were stunned to learn a stash house operated in their midst.

The neighbors said they had no idea what was happening. Border Patrol said at least one person knew something was wrong, because that person tipped them off to the stash house.

Agents detained 66 illegal immigrants at the house. Investigators said Border Patrol, Homeland Security and Hidalgo County Precinct 1 deputy constables raided the house.

Border Patrol agents notified deputy constables about a suspicious vehicle leaving a house they had under surveillance.

The deputies said the driver led them on a chase before bailing out and escaping into the brush. They think that driver was the human smuggler.

The immigrants said they are from Mexico, Guatemala and Brazil, among other countries.

Officials said as many as 10 women and two teenagers were with the group.

One man said they had been in the house for seven days.

Area residents were hesitant to speak about the incident.

"I'm a little bit scared, because my grandson and I are just right there. It's scary," one woman said.

Area residents said the people that rented the house had just moved out. After that, they say they never saw anyone arrive or leave the house.
