FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — A day of mourning was declared today at Fort Hood after an officer allegedly fired on soldiers in a preparatory area -- killing 13 people and wounding 30.
Col. Steve Braverman told a news conference that "everyone who is still alive is in stable condition." He says about half of the wounded soldiers required surgery.
The shooting suspect, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was shot and wounded during the yesterday's rampage and remained hospitalized on a ventilator.
Also, a civilian police officer working at Fort Hood is identified as the person who managed to shoot the suspected gunman -- four times.
Lt. Gen. Robert Cone says Kimberly Munley herself was wounded, in the exchange of gunfire with the suspect. Her age and hometown were not immediately released by the military.
Cone says Munley responded within about 3 minutes and shot Hasan.
