Something really exciting is happening at Region One GEAR UP and it involves an iPad.

"We forged this partnership about a year ago. We approached Apple and we are interested in their technology of course, specifically iPad. We wanted to see how we could incorporate them in to our classrooms," says David Hernandez Region One Specialist.

Region One is partnered with 44 middle schools from Laredo to Brownsville and all of those kids will be gearing up for college with iPads.

"One of the things when looking at iPads we of course knew that there was a wealth of applications wealth of features both teachers and students could utilize in the classroom but we looked specifically at what other apps we could utilize with this technology and came across, the iBooks text books and iTunes u which is an online site to distribute media content" says Hernandez

Hernandez says iBooks and iTunes is going to take these kids into a whole new hi tech world.

"With iBooks textbooks it allows us to create, take something that we have done in the past, done publications. We have done epubs, those types of format and transition those to an iBooks textbook, which is interactive. It has video. It has interactive features such as photo slide shows, 3D aspects things of that natures that students could utilize and tap in to and be engaged with through an iPad."
