WILLACY COUNTY - Lyford High School staff on Tuesday worked to comfort students after one of their classmates died in an ATV accident.
Gabriella Marina Rivera, 15, died when her ATV hit a patch of mud and rolled on its side, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers said. Another 15-year-old is in the hospital.
The sophomore and seven of her friends were riding the ATV near Lyford, officials said.
Rivera would have celebrated her 16th birthday next month.
Rivera was a star athlete. She played volleyball, basketball and softball. Her father said she was featured as a breakout star in a recent newspaper article.
Lyford High School officials cancelled homecoming activities after the deadly crash.
