HOUSTON (AP) A deputy serving an assault-related warrant at a Houston-area home has shot and killed the suspect who hid in a closet before allegedly threatening officers.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office says the man was fatally shot Wednesday night.

Authorities say the suspect's girlfriend let deputies into the home. The man was located in a closet and refused to come out. Officials say the suspect appeared to have a shiny object in his hand and allegedly made a sudden move toward officers when he was shot.

The suspect died later at a hospital. His name was not immediately released.

The deputy who fatally shot the suspect wasn't hurt. He's been put on paid leave.

The sheriff's office did not immediately provide further details Thursday.
