HARLINGEN - A man shot after exchanging gunfire with police in Primera in September died Wednesday at a local hospital.

Police said an underlying condition may have caused the elderly man's death.

The shooting happened after police responded to a domestic disturbance call on Sept. 30. Police said Willard Hargrove came out of the house and opened fire on officers.

A Primera police officer shot the man in the upper thigh, officials said. The incident happened on Spec. Eric Salinas Street. The officer was not injured in the shooting.

He was placed on administrative leave while the Texas Rangers investigate the shooting.

The suspect faced charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and domestic violence. Those charges were never filed.

The case remains under investigation.
