SAN JUAN - Police are searching for a man who officers said beat a woman with a baseball bat.

San Juan police said Waldo Sanchez has been on the run for six days.

"She sustained very serious injuries to her body, including a broken wrist and two broken fingers," San Juan Police Sgt. Rudy Luna said.

Luna said the victim tried to escape through a window before her attacker fled the scene.

"We have information that he possibly fled to Mexico. (That) is not going to stop us from looking for him," Luna said.

Luna said one of the hurdles in cases like this is getting the victim to speak out about the abuse.

"We have to understand that one in every four women experiences domestic violence. There's help out there, like Mujeres Unidas," Luna said.

Mujeres Unidas Community Education Coordinator Rosalinda Rodriguez said the organization's doors are always open.

Rodriguez said that a case like the one in San Juan can make going home difficult for a victim.

"In her case ... she does not know where he is," Rodriguez said. "There is no guarantee that he is in Mexico ... or where he could be hiding."

Luna said the investigation remains active. He said it is unclear why Sanchez assaulted the victim.

Anyone with information on Sanchez's location is asked to call San Juan Crime Stoppers at 956-283-8477.
