McALLEN - An alleged top Zeta cartel leader went before a federal judge Thursday in McAllen.
Ivan Caballero Velazquez, also known as El Taliban, was in court for a status hearing. He is expected back in court next month.
Caballero faces conspiracy charges stemming from his alleged involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering, officials said. He was indicted in 2008.
Mexican authorities arrested Caballero in Mexico in 2013 and extradited him to the United States. He entered a not-guilty plea the first time he went before a judge.
Caballero will be back in court on April 7 to let the court know if plans to plead guilty or go to trial. He faces life in prison if convicted at trial.
