EDINBURG - Hidalgo County investigators have a shooting suspect in custody. The man is accused of shooting his wife at IDEA Quest Academy this morning. His wife, a teacher at the Edinburg campus, was hit in the hand.
We're told the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute. Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino said as many as three shots might have been fired. It happened in the school parking lot at around 6:30 a.m. School officials said that's before students arrive on campus.
Another school employee took the victim to the hospital. Deputies said the suspect left the scene. According to the sheriff's office, one of the suspect's relatives later called authorities to arrange the suspect's surrender.
Deputies recovered the suspect's vehicle and the gun used in the shooting. We're told the suspect is cooperating with investigators. He's expected to face charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. There's no word yet when the suspect will face a judge.
Meanwhile, the victim is recovering.
The campus, which is located at Rooth Road and Mile 17 1/2, canceled classes for the day. Students headed to the school this morning were rerouted to the IDEA campus on Rogers Road.
"I thought they handled it so efficiently. You know, they (the students) didn't even know there was a shooting. They thought it was a gas leak," said a parent.
Cynthia Morales, another parent, told us, "I was just glad that they weren't anywhere near the school when it happened."
Two Edinburg CISD campuses are located near IDEA Quest Academy. As a result of the shooting, ECISD officials beefed up security at Longoria Middle School and Flores-Zapata Elementary. But no lockdowns were ordered.
IDEA Public Schools CEO and founder Tom Torkelson said they decided to close the campus for the day following news of the shooting.
"Every other one of our IDEA campuses is open today and all of our students are safe and sound," said Torkelson. "And I have a kid at one of the campuses, and I know he is just doing a good job learning today... and he's also safe and sound."
Classes at IDEA Quest Academy will resume Thursday. A spokesperson told us they'll have counseling available to staff and students who need it.
