EDCOUCH - Teachers at Edcouch-Elsa High School remember fallen Army Spc. Kevin Cardoza as a respectful student who had a deep love for his country.
Cardoza's photo will go up in the school next to the one of a fellow fallen serviceman. Teachers said it will be a fitting tribute for the man who once walked the school's hallways.
"We feel very sad for the family, but also very proud of his accomplishment and him being out there," Edcouch-Elsa Principal Rene Ramos said.
Ramos remembers Cardoza as a quiet and reserved student.
Math Teacher Rohny Escareno said Cardoza was a responsible student.
"He stood out because he was always very respectful. They are seniors, and they miss a couple of days. He would always come back and say, ‘I'm sorry, sir. I haven't caught up ... but I'll make sure I do,'" Escareno said.
Escareno said he knew from the start Cardoza would join the armed forces.
"There are times when a student says I'll just join the military, and then waives it off. You can hear it sometimes. But he wanted to ... that was his calling," Escareno said.
