PHARR - A 16-year-old Mexican national was shot on Friday after he rammed the stolen truck he was driving into another vehicle, police said.

The shooting happened at the Pharr international bridge. Officials said the officer spotted the truck and tried to stop the driver, but the teenager tried to flee and plowed into a car with a family inside.

"At that point the officer felt that the family was in danger, and that he himself was in danger, and discharged his weapon," Pharr Police Chief Ruben Villescas said.

The suspect was hit in the arm.

The teenager was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Police have not said what charges he will face.

The Texas Rangers now are investigating the case.
