DENTON, Texas (AP) Natural gas money has been good to Denton, Texas.
The city north of Dallas has new parks, a golf course and miles of grassy soccer fields. But local leaders are considering banning the gas drilling method known as hydraulic fracturing, even though it has generated tens of millions of dollars for the town over the last decade.
The proposed ban reflects a shift in public opinion. In place of gas drills, some of Denton's 120,000 residents now envision a future in which their town is known for environmentally friendly commerce and the nation's largest community garden.
If adopted, the ordinance could make Denton the first city in Texas to permanently prohibit fracking. Even if the city council rejects the ban, it will go to voters in November.
