FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) The Texas Republican Party would endorse psychological treatment that seeks to turn gay people straight under a new platform advancing at the group's state convention.

The anti-gay language is partly aimed at rebuking laws in two states that ban so-called "reparative therapy" on minors. It survived a key vote late Thursday at the Texas Republican Convention and will be up for final consideration Saturday.

In August, New Jersey joined California as the only states to ban licensed therapists from using such treatments.

Gay conservatives in Texas could still emerge from the convention with a rare victory on a separate issue: removing decades-old platform language that states, "Homosexuality tears at the fabric of society."

But gay conservative groups say that success would be offset by the new therapy language.
