MCALLEN - A theft victim is asking McAllen police to release surveillance video of the crime. Maria Pena said she hopes it could provide investigators with tips about the thieves.

The crime happened inside the Texas Thrift store Monday afternoon. Pena said one woman distracted her, while another took the purse. Pena's purse was inside a shopping cart underneath clothes.

The purse had Pena's medications, IDs, credit and debit cards, phone, her mother's ID and $1,500 cash.

Pena is now to working to freeze and switch accounts. "You hear about this and you don't realize what you have to go through when something like this happens," she said.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS has been asking McAllen police to release the surveillance video. They told us they've been looking at it as part of their investigation. They didn't say why they haven't released it at this point or if other similar crimes have been reported.

For now, Pena is warning shoppers to keep a tight grip on their purses.
