HARLINGEN - The Harlingen Police Department has issued a warning for homeowners displaying pricey holiday decorations.

Harlingen Police Sgt. David Osborne said criminals are driving through neighborhoods looking for the displays. He said the thefts are happening all over Harlingen.

The department assembled a special patrol unit to watch over outdoor holiday decorations. He said those decorations can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars and stealing them could be a felony.

Osborne said the department had four reports of stolen decorations last week.

"They want to take these lawn ornaments and items, and they want to sell them. They sell them door to door in some other neighborhood, or at a pawn shop, or they want to take them to a flea market somewhere. They want to get rid of these lawn ornaments for the money," Osborne said.

Osborne said the best way to protect the ornaments is by deflating them and turning off holiday lights each night before bed time.

Osborne said people should report any theft by calling 956-216-5906.
