Tony Schumacher takes No. 1 spot

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) Local favorite Tony Schumacher raced to the No. 1 qualifying position in Top Fuel on Saturday night in the Route 66 NHRA Nationals.

The Chicago resident had a run of 3.763 seconds at 324.83 mph for his second top qualifying position of the season and 69th of his career. He has seven No. 1 qualifying positions the track and three event victories.

Schumacher, who broke a 32-race victory drought two weeks ago in Bristol, Tenn., will face another Chicagoland-based driver, T.J. Zizzo, in the opening round.

John Force remained on top in Funny Car, while Allen Johnson topped the Pro Stock field, and Hector Arana Sr. led the Pro Stock Motorcycle class.
