Trade Rep. Ron Kirk rallies Texas Democrats

HOUSTON (AP) U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk rallied Democrats at their state convention in Houston, urging them to get out the vote.
The former Dallas mayor told party supporters on Friday that they should ignore those who say Democrats can never win in Texas.
Kirk defeated a Republican to become mayor in Dallas when many said a Democrat didn't stand a chance.
Democrats have not won a statewide race in Texas since 1994. The party's leaders claim that local elected officials like Kirk are laying the groundwork for the party to win more in the future.
Kirk said Texas Democrats should not let the past discourage them, urging them to vote for Obama and Democrats down the ballot. He repeated many of the themes around President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.
