EDINBURG - The trial is under way for a man accused of taking part in a kidnapping plot that ended in a shootout with sheriff's deputies.
The crimes happened in 2011. Prosecutors said the Gulf Cartel hired Jose Luis Alvarez to recover a lost drug load. Alvarez claims he was held at gunpoint and forced to comply.
Today's trial included dash-cam video of the shooting. It shows a deputy shot several times in the chest. That deputy has since recovered from the shooting. The Hidalgo County sheriff called the shooting the first official recorded case of spillover violence.
