MCALLEN - The trial begins today for a father and son accused of shooting a federal agent in 2012. Pedro Alvarado and Arnoldo Alvarado are charged with attempted murder.
Prosecutors say they chased a Homeland Security Investigations agent down FM 490, north of Hargill in July 2012. Special Agent Kelton Harrison was shot in the back. He recovered and later testified during a pretrial hearing that he was conducting a surveillance drug operation on the Alvarado's property.
The father and son claim they were acting in self-defense. Another Alavarado son was also involved. Marquez Alvarado, 18, was a juvenile at the time. He was certified to stand trial as an adult in state court.
