EDINBURG - Jesse Guerrero Jr. and his wife Michelle Lynette were driving in Edinburg when they were rear-ended by another car. Lynette died in the crash; Jesse is hospitalized in critical condition. His father says he barely remembers the accident.
"All of the sudden he just remembers when the paramedics were talking to him already, and he was telling them about his wife. And they said they were going to take care of her, and that's all he remembers," says Jesus Guerrero Sr.
Officers tell us the driver who hit the couple was drunk. Police have charged her with intoxication assault and intoxication manslaughter. Lynette's mother says she knows her daughter is in a better place.
Jesus Guerrero Sr. says they haven't been able to tell his son about the death of his wife.
"He was in and out of it when he saw me. He was dazed. His first words were "How is Michelle?" And I couldn't tell him anything," he says.
Due to the extent of his injuries, Guerrero won't even be able to attend his wife's funeral. The driver charged in the accident, 24-year-old Belinda April Cruz, has been arrested for driving while intoxicated twice before. One of those arrests happened just two months before this weekend's accident.
The judge set her total bond at $500,000.
