HARLINGEN - Dr. Bruce A. Leibert has been named 2011 Physician of the Year for Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen.
Leibert serves as director of the Valley Baptist Family Practice Residency Program. The program, a three-year residency following medical school, trains family practice doctors. Residents are trained in all aspects of family medicine, including internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, general surgery and general orthopedics.
Since the Family Practice Residency Program started in 1996, Leibert and his faculty have trained 67 residents.
Leibert is also very active in the Summer Medical Institute, a month-long community outreach in which medical students from across the United States come to the Valley to provide free health care, health screenings and a message of faith.
Leibert also established and serves as president of Rio Grande Valley Medical Missions. The organization funds weekly outreaches by a team of doctors and nurses to provide free health care in local communities.
