MCALLEN - Valley Interfaith is holding the Second Annual Convocation on Immigration Reform on Jan. 19. The event, which will feature clergy leaders from the Catholic, Methodist, Episcopal, Lutheran and Presbyterian churches, will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church at 4200 N. McColl Road in McAllen.
The conference is an opportunity for clergy leaders, church members, representatives from area universities and non-profits, and other interested individuals to learn about their roles in bringing about immigration reform.
Bishop Daniel Flores, the Rev. James Dorff, the Rev. Maurice Friedman, the Rev. Linda Whitworth-Reed and the Rev. Ray Tiemann will come together to discuss the importance of immigration reform and to lead a non-denominational worship service.
The leaders will outline priorities for immigration reform, including family unity, achievement of safe border communities, and the protection of workers. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to choose among a variety of educational workshops on important issues related to immigration: human trafficking and detention, immigrants' rights, economic myths and realities of immigration, education and future generations, and the history of immigration in the United States. The conference will be held in both English and Spanish.
