EDINBURG - A Rio Grande Valley Catholic congregation is elevating prayers for the members of the Rose of Lima Church in Newtown, Conn.
The church helped the Holy Family Church in Edinburg two years ago. It was a gift of love that the local parishioners hope to pay back with prayers.
"It is significant," the Rev. Eusebio Martinez said. He is the pastor at Holy Family Church.
Martinez said his parishioners share a bond with the congregation in Newtown, Conn.
"It was a surprise when a couple came over here then told me they were looking for one of the poorest areas in the country. They found out that the Diocese of Brownsville was one of the poorest dioceses," Martinez said.
The Rose of Lima church lost several members during last week's mass shooting at a school in Newtown.
The church donated $11,000 to help build a new parish hall and education center at Holy Family church in Edinburg.
Martinez was invited to visit the congregation in Newtown.
"When I heard the name of the parish, I said ‘oh my God, how many of those people I might have greeted?'" Martinez said.
Martinez said his congregation is keeping the people in Newtown in their prayers.
"Our prayers will help us to be related to the pain that they are going through, and sometimes when people know that they are praying for them that is also strength given to them," Martinez said.
He believes the families will find comfort in prayer.
