Valley police are on alert. The Gulf Cartel is threatening to shoot at officers to protect their loads.
The warning came from the Texas Department of Public Safety. CHANNEL 5 NEWS reviewed a letter sent to different agencies in the McAllen area. The letter, citing information from the FBI, warns the Gulf Cartel held a meeting last weekend.
At that meeting, a cartel member advised that certain smuggling routes in the McAllen area would be closed down in order to smuggle high-value cargo that is being shipped southbound into Mexico. The Gulf Cartel issued orders to open fire on any us law enforcement officer to protect that cargo.
Local agencies say officers are always on high alert. This warning is to make sure they are watching the border and their backs as the Gulf Cartel tries moving shipments southbound.
The DPS would not comment. A spokesman did say it's common for these kinds of letters to be sent to different agencies. We tried contacting the FBI about the threat. They did not return our calls.
