LYFORD - The Rio Grande Valley will be represented on the National Christmas Tree display in Washington, D.C. this year.

Students at Lyford Middle School are creating one of a kind ornaments that will hang from the tree in the nation’s capital.

Toniqua Smith, one of 24 students chosen from Lyford Middle School's art class, decorating a Christmas tree ornament for this year’s National Christmas Tree.

"We represent our good spirit and we represent like, Texas and Lyford and I'm just really excited right now," says Smith.

The United States Department of Education worked with art agencies nationwide to select different schools from across the country to decorate the ornaments.

The school says they received them last month and sent them back, fully decorated, this week.
