WESLACO - Police have stumbled into another mystery at the Weslaco city cemetery.

City workers on Tuesday discovered bones at a plot they were preparing for a burial. Police were called to investigate.

Police at the scene were not ready to answer questions. Investigators locked the gates to the cemetery as they looked for more bones.

The city manager said the discovery is proof of how bad things are at the cemetery.

A CHANNEL 5 NEWS crew also discovered cracked headstones piled up right next to the fence.

"We see that there's smoke here," Weslaco City Manager Leo Olivares said during an interview in August.

"Over the past few years, we've had some litigation of the cemetery ... there's been three or four cases. You start to wonder if there's a problem that's emerging here," he said.

Olivares said during a telephone interview Tuesday he wasn't surprised more bones were found. Unmarked human remains were discovered at the cemetery earlier this year.

"We have records that are scattered or are non-existent, so we're trying to build a database of what actually is out there," Olivares said.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS first exposed the cemetery confusion in early 2011. Police are involved in the investigation.

"Was there a conspiracy? Those are the types of questions we're asking," Olivares said.
