HARLINGEN- A former Harlingen police officer is taking a plea deal to avoid jail time.

Robert Ahrens will serve five years of probation. An indictment revealed he accepted drug money in January 2011.

Prosecutors with the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office said Ahrens took between $1,500 and $20,000.

The DA said Ahrens was caught when a confidential informant led to the initial investigation in this case. Ahrens resigned from the force.
