GEAR UP Student Excited about Mentorship Program

DONNA- One GEAR UP program is helping students pay it forward. The program encourages GEAR UP students to give back and mentor their fellow freshmen in high school.

Marco D’Anthony is a junior at Donna High. He’s a member of the ambassador program that mentors freshmen during their advisory classes.

“They talk to them about college readiness, career readiness, the importance of being prepared for their college or their career and just familiarizing the freshmen with the high school environment,” said Erika Guerrero, English teacher and ambassador program sponsor.

D’Anthony said he enjoys being a mentor for these freshmen.

“I like being a mentor because, believe it or not, you're impacting these students’ lives,” D’Anthony said. “As a mentor, it's your job to lead them in the right way. And as time goes on, they will be like, ‘Wow, you have inspired us.’”

D’Anthony said he loves helping others, because he was raised right. He said the GEAR UP program has helped him become who he is.

“GEAR UP has been awesome to me, since 8th grade I started the program,” he said. “And it's been in me since the beginning.”

D’Anthony said GEAR UP is preparing him for what’s ahead.

“A lot of people, as they are growing up, they're like, I don't know what I want to do,” he said. “Since my freshman year, I’m here in it for this reason.” He said he plans to major in political science and wants to attend medical school. He wants to become a cardiologist.

D’Anthony said he plans to stay in the Rio Grande Valley.

“This is my home and I have been raised here,” he said. “I love the people here, the culture. It’s very diverse and, I mean, I love it. There's no other place I would be.”
