Precinct 4 Constable's Office Will Serve as a Collection Site for Prescription Meds

EDINBURG – The Precinct 4 Constable’s Office will serve as a collection site for expired, unwanted and unused prescription medications. The goal is to reduce prescription drug abuse.

In Hidalgo County, there were approximately 848 reports of dangerous exposure to prescription medication made to the Texas Poison Center Network from 2009 to 2014.

Constable Atanacio “J.R.” Gaitan and Uniting Neighbors in Drug Abuse Defense (UNIDAD) were awarded a grant to add the medication drop box. The UNIDAD coalition is a program of the Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas. The Constable Precinct 4 Office is located at 2814 South Business Highway 281 in Edinburg.

Most people often have to wait for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day to dispose of prescription drugs safely.

"The community will now have a permanent, safe drug disposal alternative; no questions asked," Gaitan said. "The goal is to reduce the availability of prescribed medication for recreational use, which has resulted in addiction, intoxication and overdoses."
