Former GEAR UP Student Part of Historic Program

WESLACO — Beatriz Ramirez Guevara is helping to make history at CHANNEL 5 NEWS. The former GEAR UP student is a SAP producer for CHANNEL 5 NEWS.

Ramirez Guevara works from 2 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. She said it’s not an easy schedule, but the GEAR UP program helped her prepare for the work life.

The former GEAR UP student said she’s thrilled to be a part of the CHANNEL 5 NEWS team.

“It’s amazing,” she said. “We started off really simple, and we have come a long way. I have met tremendous people that work hard, and we work as a team.”

Teamwork is what Ramirez Guevara’s friend and colleague, Orlando Vargas, said he loves the most about her.

“She takes initiative to make sure that people work in a team,” Vargas said. “Working at Channel 5, you are part of a great family and team.”

Ramirez Guevara has made a name for herself at CHANNEL 5 NEWS. Web news producer, Ivan “Pepper” Herrera said he admires his friend and colleague’s knack for being a new team leader.

“I would say that she's a very hard working individual,” Herrera said. “She never gives up. And she's very helpful, very approachable.”

Vargas said he believes Ramirez Guevara learned her leadership skills, while she attended the University of Texas-Pan American.

“I used to call her the mayor of UTPA, because she was always involved in so many different organizations,” he said. “She was in GEAR UP, she was in Upward Bound. She was in the University Program Board, and then she was doing TV and radio.”

CHANNEL 5 NEWS is proud to have the former GEAR UP student as a part of KRGV-TV’s SAP program.
