Concert Helps Fund STARS Scholarship

HIDALGO — On Thursday, the band “Train” played at the State Farm Arena to raise money for the South Texas Academic Rising Scholars (STARS) scholarship fund.

STARS was founded in 2002 by Joe Lamantia and his family, who owns and operates L and F Distributors.

Greg Lamantia, vice chairman of STARS, explained how the scholarship works:

"You have everything from a first time son or daughter going to college for higher education and this allows them to do that,” he said. “You may have a single mom, single parent, going to community college and this allows them to do that."

STARS raised $1.2 million during the 2014-2015 year. That money will be given out to about 1,300 students looking to seek higher education.
